Like obedience, conformity has had a bad reputation among social psychologists, and this stems in part from influential early studies that depicted people doing foolish, irrational, or bad things in order to conform

Conformity is going along with the crowd” (Chapter 9, pg. 310). “Like obedience, conformity has had a bad reputation among social psychologists, and this stems in part from influential early studies that depicted people doing foolish, irrational, or bad things in order to conform” (pg. 310).

Why do we conform and obey? Of course we know and our text points out that obedience can also be a good thing, a “prosocial behavior” (pg. 293-294) and that it is a necessary part of our cooperative daily living.

Your discussion post:

  • Describe a scenario in which you were persuaded to do something that you did not really want to do. (Of course you do not have to use any example that is too personal or makes you uncomfortable.)

For example:

  • Have you ever worn a fashion that you didn’t even like just to fit in with your peer group?
  • Have you ever pretended to agree with your friends because you feared being different?
  • After describing your scenario think about what the text says concerning the reasons we conform and obey.
  • What made you conform? Be sure to cite resources in your post

  • For our third week’s discussion we are to talk about a time we were persuaded to do something we did not really want to do. We are to also say what made us conform. A time that I was persuaded to do something was in high school. I was a first-year student in high school at this point in my early years. In high school being one of the popular kids was something everyone wanted – so I did as well. I was presented the chance to be in their group, so I took it (even though I did not really want to). In that group you had to do specific things to be a part of their group and welcomed. You had to dress a certain way, act a certain way, and just all around be the way they were. I had to buy Miss Me, American Eagle, and all the high rated name brand clothes. I had to wake up early in the morning to either straighten or curl my hair. Also had to do a full face of make up early in the morning. I had to do all of this to be in their standard of pretty. I conformed to this because it was other people’s interest and/or dream to be in their group so it was mine as well. After a while I figured out that it was just not my dream and moved toward my type of person in search of friends. The pier pressure to be more, want more, and hang out with the “popular” crowd did not overtake my priority of enough sleep! I did continue to wear the clothing (as it was already purchased) and wear full face make up from time to time, but not every day. I realized my priorities were just that – what I find important. believe that with all the news, recommendations and data provided on a daily basis of death rate around the world not only in America, I was persuaded to get the Covid Vaccine. My beliefe and instinct didnt really want to because I felt it was rushed due to the circumstances but still not enough data collect to know the short/long term effect it would have on different individuals. I was often persuaded by my young adults and the Goverment theory ” Dont do it Mom” and in reality I didnt want to but I had to due to high risk and being imunocompromised . I figured it will kill if I dont and it will possibly kill me if I do so lets run the risk. I displayed ProSocial Behavior, ” doing something that is good for other people or for societyas a whole” Braumeister & Bushman (2020). I did as a teen in my early 12 or 13 pretended to agree with my friends behavior at the time knowing what she was doing wrong and endangering her life by attending partys with much older teens, drinking and being promiscuos, but if I didnt attend at least once with her even if had to make up excuses after, I would be looked at as the outcast and would no longer be a fit for the group as I was lloked at being judging. and no longer the cool girl. I believe what made me comform was the need at the time to fit in and the thought I would loose my cool girl status. ” I was going along with the crowd even though we were doing irational, dangerous things” Braumeister & Bushman (2020). I was in essence obeying thier rules and expectations even though I knew the risk but the wanting to fit in took presidence.
