Looking at current trends in technologies, this growth is expected to continue and expand in the next decade. Per (Li., et., al., 2021), Digital innovations such as the consolidation of tele-health the development of 5G wireless networks, Artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things and other technology innovations have created an extraordinary ecosystem for new opportunities in healthcare and other industries. The current healthcare technologies have improved and enhanced the quality of care provided to our patients and their families. In the organization I work for, the major innovation that impacted the care has been the use of the electronic health records (EHRs). The use of the EHRs has brought about so many improvements such as reducing errors, improving treatment time, efficiency and quality of care, increased patient engagement in their own care and enhanced data accessibility. According to (Lyles., et., al., 2020), about 90% of US healthcare systems and providers offer online patient portal access through their EHRs, and only 15-30 percent of patients use patient portal platforms indicating that more improvement is needed to attract patients to use the patient portals. I believe that on service that should be considered in our organization would be to include Telehealth/telemedicine access through the health portal. Giving the patients the option to access their primary care remotely can reduce a lot of reasons why patients fail to follow thru with their healthcare providers. It reduces the issue of transportation, child care need to enable parents to go to appointments, the stress of driving long distances, and opens up more appointment times for health care organizations. Physicians’ ability to use remote patient monitoring (RPM) to monitor patients outside clinical settings can greatly improve patient’s quality of life. Using RPM such as wearable sensors and smart watches that wirelessly collect data and transmit it to your healthcare provider can enable your provider to intervene when you need it and gives to patient freedom to leave their lives un-teetered to hospital monitors. The issue with the use of patient portal I believe is mainly that many of the older patients have difficulties with technology and are not very informed on how to use the portals. If I that work in the healthcare setting sometimes have issues accessing and using my personal patient portal, how much more someone who did not grow up using tech. some patients may also not be financially able to have access to electronic devices that will give them access to these systems. The article by (Jiang., et., al., 2022), discusses the importance of being able to remotely monitor a patient especially regarding the effected the delivery of health during the pandemic. By improving remote monitoring, providers will be able to monitor patients remotely until they need more advanced in-hospital care. This could reduce to number of exposures from infected patients, reduce unnecessary number of patients in the waiting rooms so medical personnel can focus on critical patients and avoid long patient lines. Healthcare trends are indeed indicating that care will be more intertwined with technology and we need to be ready to embrace these and help our patients understand these changes. There are many benefits that are promised to us with technology innovations but we have to remember that not all patients understand or have access to technology and work towards improving patient teaching on health system related usage. Yet, data breaches could jeopardize patient privacy and have negative legal and financial repercussions for healthcare institutions. This is one possible risk connected with EHRs. For instance, a breach of personal health data can have a significant negative impact on individuals. As such, there is a possibility of several fraudulent actions, such as identity theft, insurance fraud, fake prescriptions, and other associated offenses, should personal health records be compromised (Pool et al, 2024). Moreover, telehealth is an additional advancement in healthcare technology that has the promise of influencing nursing practice. The term “telehealth” describes a broad spectrum of health services provided via devices ready for the internet, including computers, smartphones, videophones, and telephones (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022, p. 403). Enhancing patient satisfaction, lowering healthcare costs, and expanding access to care may lead to better patient care outcomes. Nurses, for instance, can offer patient counseling, and doctors can monitor patients with long-term diseases over the phone and respond to changes in their health. Nevertheless, there are some drawbacks and risks with telehealth, including billing issues, the lack of face-to-face interactions, legal compliance, and the possibility of technical problems that could lower the standard of service (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022, p. 403). Concerns around security and privacy may also make some patients reluctant to use telemedicine.
